It seems like everyone knows how to apply fragrance or cologne, but have you ever wondered how to make your fragrance last longer on your skin?
Here is a list of 10 tips to make sure you can enjoy the scent even more.
10 Tips On How To Make Fragrance Last Longer
1.DON’T WEAR TOO MUCH PERFUME
Hold on… I know what you are thinking. This is a rubbish list! Let me explain.
When you wear and apply too many sprays of a perfume every day you can become anosmic to it. This means you won’t be able to smell your favourite perfume on yourself but people around you will be able to smell it. To make sure you will be able to smell the longevity of your fragrance with the tips below, we first need to make sure you don’t become anosmic to the scent!
2. APPLY FRAGRANCE IN YOUR HAIR OR CLOTHES
Many people will advise you NOT to apply the scent on hair and clothes however, if you really want to make your fragrance last the longest it is one of the best tricks. Why? It is because scent attaches better to natural fibers than skin. Spraying cologne on a cotton shirt or a silk dress will make it last for days. The same goes for hair, hair is like a textile in itself and when perfume is sprayed on hair, it lasts an extremely long time.
Be careful however as perfume can also damage fabrics and make your hair dryer because of the alcohol included in perfume. This is a very rare occurrence but it must be mentioned.
3. MOISTURIZER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
Fragrance always lasts longer when it is worn on well moisturised skin. If you suffer from dry skin, make sure to moisturise straight after getting out of the shower with a non-fragranced moisturiser. I love this one because its affordable and its recommended by every dermatologist I have consulted with. Fragrance dehydrates our skin so by using a fragranced body moisturiser we would be doing the exact opposite of what we are trying to achieve. Make fragrance last longer.
4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PERFUME CONCENTRATION
When choosing your fragrance or cologne always remember to choose the right concentration. There are many to choose from such as Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and even Extrait de Parfum. This is just a few because there are many more to choose from. Most often, the Extrait de Parfum or pure perfume oil will be the strongest concentration and also longest lasting fragrance.
Be careful: There are exceptions to the rule, for example Dior Sauvage EDT is stronger and more longer lasting than the Parfum. Also Dior Hypnotic Poison EDT smells very different to its EDP version. Always test the fragrance on skin before buying it. Just because a fragrance has the same name and has EDP sticker on it doesn’t mean it will smell very similar to EDT and that it will be longer lasting.
5. LEARN ABOUT SCENT FAMILIES
Some scents will last longer than others depending on which scent family they come from. For example woody and oriental fragrance generally last longer than light fresh or aquatic fragrances. In order to make sure your fragrance will last the longest choose fragrances that have woody or vanilla bases. These are some of the fragrances I would recommend for a woman and a man.
6.APPLY FRAGRANCE STRAIGHT OUT OF THE SHOWER
Perfume will last longest when its applied on moisturised skin and even longer when your pores are open and the fragrance can sink into pores. The best combination would be to leave your skin slightly damp, apply non fragranced moisturiser and fragrance straight after.
7. PULSE POINTS
When applying fragrance, apply it on pulse points. Those are the points on our body where blood circulates close to the surface of our skin, making our skin warmer. This means your perfume will project of your skin more and therefore the scent will linger around you for longer. Some of those pulse points are, wrists, neck, behind ears, behind knees and in our elbows.
8. STORE FRAGRANCES THE RIGHT WAY
One thing that is very important in making perfume last longer is preserving the juice in the right way. When storying fragrance keep it in a dry, dark place where the temperature of the room doesn’t fluctuate. One thing to avoid at all costs is keeping fragrances in a bathroom. When fragrance is stored right it doesn’t loose its properties or scent. When stored wrong, the molecules of the fragrance will be damaged and the fragrance won’t last as long and will start smelling odd.
9. REAPPLY WHEN NEEDED
If the fragrance you love is a light floral or aquatic scent even with all these tips it is possible it won’t last more than 4-6h. If that is the case I would recommend buying a small size of the fragrance, 30ML and carry it with you to reapply throughout the day. Some fragrances just have to be reapplied and thats it. I would also recommend carrying a little pouch like this to protect the perfume bottle from scratching.

10. USE OTHER SCENTED PRODUCTS
Quite often nowadays your favourite fragrance will come with a perfumed body lotion, hair perfume, perfume oil or even a perfumed pencil! Layering all of these will help fragrance last longest and will make you feel like a walking perfume 🙂 One of the best perfumed product choices are Chanel Chance, Roja Parfums or Dior.
